Reflections, a year of Learning

In this, the final edition of JDH News & Views for the year, we would like to pause, look back and reflect on what has been, a terrific 12 months…

What have we learned?

2017 was one of our best years yet. Not only did we establish our very own creative hub and offices in Darlinghurst, we also grew our team to 28 amazing architects and designers.

We welcomed new team members from Brazil, Italy and the UK, providing our truly international team with a wealth of new ideas and worldly interests, not to mention a surge in the banter at the annual JDH Backyard Cricket Match!

JDH Ed, our own in house learning academy, has gone from strength to strength, with the wonderful Tom Barrett coming on board to guide (and challenge!) us in what and how we learn. We have designed a new curriculum for our middle leaders, building on the mentorship program already in place for our up and coming bright stars.

We gained new clients, and engaged in several State Significant Projects, including primary and secondary schools for the Department of Education, and St Francis Catholic College, a new K-12 school at Edmondson Park for the Wollongong Diocese.

After nearly 7 years of working together, JDH completed the third stage of building works at St Ursula’s College at Kingsgrove. This adds an administration block to its already impressive suite of new facilities.

Defining Moments

When constant learning is your mission, every day is a defining moment.

Over the last 12 months we have combined the help and guidance of Tom Barrett with our belief in human centered design, taking a whole team approach to redefining our Vision, Mission and Values.

We gained a new understanding of empathy, critique and iteration using Design Thinking not only in our creative pursuits but also to solve wicked problems in our business.

Design Thinking has played a big part in our lives during 2017.

We have gained insight into our purpose and practice, and exercised our creative muscles with aplomb.

It has allowed us to grow into fully fledged, truly curious & creative innovators, and we are now relentless in our quest for a better way.

In August of this year Jayne and Zoya spent time at Stanford University’s d.school, working with global social entrepreneurs, using human centered design to make social change for the better.

The team learned how to think differently to make greater impact – and we also connected with new, and gifted friends.

One such friend is tiny women with momentous purpose, Wawira Njiru ,the founder and of Food 4 Education

This non-for-profit organisation was brought into being by our Stanford buddy, Wawira.

In November of this year we hosted a fun filled charity event, bringing together our friends and colleagues to party hard, all in the name of a very good cause.

Thank you from the bottom of our heart to everyone who helped us raise over $13,500!

This money will help the children of Kenya perform better in school by providing them with healthy nutritious meals once a day. What a phenomenal effort!

so…What’s Next?

With the new year looming we are intent on our mission –  connecting People, Pedagogy and Place to create environments that enable people to shine

We look forward to Jayne continuing to share her knowledge and learning as a speaker and presenter at several conferences, including the ever-thought provoking LEaRN Talking Spaces 2018 conference in February. (Tickets nearly sold out!)

JDH  are also hopeful we will showcase selected projects at the 18th annual Learning Environments Australia Conference ,to be held across Sydney in May of next year.

And, finally, whilst 2018 holds great opportunity and prospect for JDH Architects, we would like to acknowledge all the support and commitment our clients, consultants, friends and families and team who have supported us in our Mission –

…Creating learning environments that enable people to shine

The JDH Team wish you and your family a safe and joyful Christmas.

Merry Christmas!
