St Catherine Labouré Catholic Primary School, Gymea
St Catherine Labouré is a vibrant three-stream Catholic primary school, committed to empowering students to reach their potential.
Part of the Sydney Catholic School community, St Catherine Labouré has a proud, and longstanding tradition of educational excellence, with a focus on creating collaborative learning environment with parents, students and the community.
JDH Architects was engaged to take an under-utilised multi-purpose space and create a new learning hub for Kindergarten students. With the principles of Reggio Emilia as the heart of the brief, the space had to be connected to the child, curriculum and environment, whilst offering a place of wonderment for the school’s youngest students.
The team collaborated closely with the school, with the aim of understanding how the pedagogy might allow the space to unfold into an exciting and inspiring learning centre. The first stage of this three-tier project has transformed an under-utilised space into a vibrant, flexible, and versatile learning hub for the Kindergarten students.
The experimental precedents of letting children design their own space through a series of creative workshops produced a highly successful communal space with adaptable areas, partially designed by the students themselves.
The new learning spaces reflected student’s ideas and were designed to stimulate creative ways of thinking in a fresh and modern environment. With initial scope re-purpose a multi-purpose space to create three Kindergarten learning spaces, the school soon realised that further development of the site would be required to support a school-wide 21st century pedagogy.
