sustainability
JDH Architects is passionate about designing sustainable buildings. We believe that architectural design creates a unique opportunity to make buildings didactic – to educate people about the responsibility we all have for the protection and care of the environment.
Sustainable buildings allow occupants to understand how the natural world works and, importantly, to witness and understand how human activity is connected to the environment.
The team’s approach is that of ‘total sustainable design’ incorporating a holistic view of the brief, the design, construction, operational management and the life of the building. Our mission is to design sustainable buildings in a practical, innovative and cost effective way.
We recognise that building re-use and refurbishment is the most environmentally sustainable type of development and JDH Architects excel in the retro-fitting of existing spaces. We are accomplished at thinking outside the box, working with clients to find new and exciting ways to maximise the potential of existing properties by improving internal comfort and reducing running costs.
We run our practice in such a way as to attempt to minimise our own negative impact on the environment. We actively encourage the recycle or reuse of all waste paper; minimise waste; work on local projects to minimise travel; minimise energy use within the building by avoiding the use of electrical lighting and heating and cooling systems whenever possible; turn off all electrical equipment when not in use; encourage the use of bicycles and public transport to and from work; and have a centrally located office for ease of accessibility.
