All Saints Catholic Primary School, Liverpool
All Saints Catholic Primary School is six-stream school with a focus on creating ‘lifelong learners’.
With a rich and diverse school population comprising of students with backgrounds from all over the globe, the school’s motto, ‘Love and Truth’, encapsulates the purpose and spirit of the school.
JDH Architects embraced the challenge of transforming the dark and constricted 1950s classroom block and envisioning a vibrant and creative learning hub for 180 stage three students. The team was given three months to consult, create and construct the project and rose to the challenge with aplomb.
JDH Architect’s consultation with the school focused on the educational vision for contemporary learning and idea of openness and flexibility. The principle of good visual connectivity and alternative open plan learning spaces emerged during the very first discussions. Consultation then broadened out to include other staff and parents, resulting in a new way of learning and engagement at the school.
Traditional notions of classrooms coming off long corridors were rejected in this opportunity to create spaces that were not only aesthetically complementary to the building but also encouraged a stimulating and collaborative learning environment. By discarding this traditional view, JDH Architects was able to create three separable learning areas, each with partially glazed sliding doors, permitting a sense of spatial transparency. This transparency was further enhanced by generous floor to ceiling zones with natural light pouring from high-level clerestory windows running both sides of the entire length.
