Project Description

Hazelwood ELC, Hazelbrook

Located in Hazelbrook NSW, the Hazelwood Early Childhood Centre provides day care for children aged 0 to preschool age, with a focus on community engagement and fostering happy and curious young minds.

To build a sustainable and vibrant early learning centre on a centrally located, south facing highly sloping site. Considering the needs of the child, the staff and the families was pertinent to the success of this design. JDH needed to consider creating a learning space where students would thrive whilst also catering to the critical safety considerations of this project.

JDH Architects was engaged to design a high quality, sustainable, and innovative 52 place early learning centre that accommodates easy access for children of all abilities. The building promotes modern teaching methodologies and is a 21st century response to early learning and sustainability.

The JDH design process was underpinned by close collaboration with Connect Child and Family Services and Blue Mountains City Council, as well as community stakeholder groups providing an integrated approach.

“Hazelwood Early Childhood Centre is a gorgeous, purpose built centre. JDH Architects has not only met the regulation requirements but also designed a building that has the best interests of the children as its focus. The attention to detail has captivated staff and children, such as the twinkling lights in the ceiling of the cot rooms that are just beautiful. JDH was fantastic to work with incorporating ideas from our staff and children allowing us to feel as though it is truly ‘our centre’. This environmentally sustainable building responds to the natural beauty of the region and has been designed to integrate with the Blue Mountains landscape.”
