Project Description
Orana Trade Training Centre: St Johns College, Dubbo
CLIENT
The Orana Trade Training Centre (TCC) was established in October 2012 as a Regional Skills Hub, specialising in Metal & Engineering and Agriculture & Hospitality. The centre serves three independent schools in the Dubbo region, namely St John’s College, Macquarie Anglican Grammar School and the Dubbo Christian School.
CHALLENGE
JDH Architects was engaged to design a state-of-the-art facility that provides the college and wider community with facilities in which to work, learn and create. It was important to deliver a project that was unique yet relevant to Dubbo.
SOLUTION
This project was designed to maximise the environmental benefits to create organic and stimulating learning spaces.
The project was carefully curated to include sustainable features to work with the locations surrounding features, but to also effectively accommodate growth and change. Initial design included the development of a well-considered master plan.
The project consists of three interconnected buildings and includes areas for sculpture and metal works display, plus an 80-seat café with external piazza. This building has many significant, sustainable features and is constructed in a language that relates to surrounds and local environment.
Roof mounted wind catchers, solar tubes, automated windows and rainwater harvesting were successfully integrated into the design to greatly reduce the client’s energy and water bills and contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly society.
