Project Description
University of Technology Sydney, Ultimo
CLIENT
University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is considered a bold, innovative and world-leading university located in Ultimo on Sydney’s city fringe. Founded in 1988, UTS has a distinct model of engagement in the learning process, with a focus on preparing graduates for a challenging, exciting and stimulating workplace.
CHALLENGE
JDH Architects was engaged to design and manage the refurbishment of the Faculty of Law’s internal courtyard to encourage students to stay on campus, be involved and engage in university life.
SOLUTION
This project included a dynamic outdoor space and landscaping elements. Integrated seating was wrapped around the ‘step-down courtyard’ to create a connected outdoor hub, with a choice of seating for different sized student groups and quiet spaces. The site features energy efficient power and data bollards for student use and uses pre-existing and planted trees as sources of natural shade. The orientation of furniture and space is used to maximise natural lighting and to ensure continual use of the courtyard throughout the year.
JDH Architects focused on strengthening the link between students and university life by reinforcing their sense of connection with nature within their urban campus. The resulting design connects students to the idea of place as well as strategically providing ubiquitous technology across the outdoor space.
