St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School

The project brief emphasised future-focused learning embedded by the four Cs of 21st Century learning - collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication. A collective design approach achieved these values and reinforced the school’s long-held educational vision, which involves the whole school community and encourages innovation and creativity within this wonderful centre of learning. Established in 1887, St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School has traditionally developed partnerships to empower students to value their education and includes the community in promoting innovation and creativity through collective and individual learning. Recognising these beliefs, JDH adopted a human-centered design approach and engaged staff and students in design-thinking workshops. The ultimate result was a co-created uplifting environment allowing the collaboration required to embed deeper learning. Two basic criteria were fulfilled: direct access to educational materials for every student, and designated areas for staff, study, and “messy projects”. A reconstruction of the Stage 3 learning centre, following an unfortunate fire in 2016, saw the creation of a library and dynamic spaces to stimulate children’s learning. An innovative media hub equipped with a green room, portable stage, and audio-visual technology intersects the multi-functional teaching area, creating a sense of connectivity and continuity. Existing study rooms were refurbished as open group zones with movable section dividers, to accommodate any activity. Study alcoves, perfect for reading and quiet play, are set amidst earthy tones with splashes of colour to spark interest and imagination.
