St. Catherine Laboure Primary School

The JDH team worked closely with the school and community throughout the planning and design process, ensuring a detailed understanding of the Catholic context, community context and student and teacher needs were understood and manifested in the design. In tandem to the design process facilitated Design Thinking Workshops with the school to elicit new ways of thinking about learning space, and to assist with transition and change management. The planning process was successful in developing a shared vision for the school and we embraced and encouraged input from all stakeholders.  The team reviewed plans and models, interrogating the design, and eliciting feedback. As part of the process JDH also organised visits to other schools to inspire and encourage dialogue and new ways of thinking. Our team met with the Parish Council to explore the integration of community facilities into the master plan, and we consulted with the local community to confirm that the design respectfully responded to its locale. The team challenged the design many times before we finalised it. We adjusted the lens from a holistic master planning view at the beginning, right down to the smallest storage detail as time passed, ensuring the best design. The planning process was rigorous and detailed and has resulted in a building that celebrates and supports the school’s vision for collaborative teaching and learning, providing an inspiring, welcoming and inclusive learning experience for students, teachers and community.
