St Patrick’s Primary School

The experimental precedent of engaging the whole school community in the visioning for the school evolved through a series of creative, design thinking workshops. The end result is a vibrant, exciting and highly successful adaptable learning space for St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Port Kembla. Housing all of the 7 learning groups in this single stream school, the building was designed and built on very tight budget, but results in a building which houses an agile hive of activity and learning.  Connecting learning both horizontally and vertically the spaces provide for everyone to be submerged in the learning across the whole school. Housed in a simple, linear shell, space is cleverly articulated with walls offering both transparency and connectivity, and also providing surfaces for display, technology, and learning. With a minimum of 3 focal points each room also has adjacent break-out spaces offering a variety of options for learning, and can be easily passively supervised. Flexibly furniture selected by and for the students helps create the collaborative nooks and crannies where they choose to learn and socialise.
